With the arrival of autumn, the forests unveil the most diverse color palette of the year. As they bid farewell to their leaves, branches, and older parts, they cover the ground with small natural elements that give us the opportunity to reimagine their meaning.
Take some time to explore your surroundings, starting by looking for all the colors that make up the forest: greens, oranges, browns, and even some reds! Prepare your palette of small things, you can even play around with creating mandalas of different colors, grouping the elements by size, color, shape…
Although we have always been told that spring is the time of year when the forest animals are most active, we must not forget that the forest is alive all year round! Today at Grapat, we celebrate the presence of some of those creatures that often go unnoticed during autumn!
FLYING ANTS
The great messengers of rain! They are not a specific species but rather ants in their mating season. With the humidity they leave the colony and, males and females, perform the so-called “nuptial flight.”
BEES
They never rest (not even in autumn)! After a very busy summer, bee colonies enter autumn full of new members and, like all living beings, they take advantage of autumn to build nests and produce honey to prepare for winter.
THE RED PALM WEEVIL
A traveler from North Africa that nests in palm trees from which it feeds and reproduces during the early days of autumn. It never changes homes and will always be born and die in the same palm tree.
CREATE YOUR OWN INSECTS!
1
Now it’s time to create our own autumn flying insects! Gather all the leaves, branches and fruits you collected in the forest and get creative with the insects you can make.
2
Glue the leaves together and, after letting them dry, glue them to the twig. If you collected seeds, you can use them to make the eyes for your little creatures!
3
Use the twigs to create the body of your insect, look at all the leaves you have and try different combinations to create a diverse ecosystem of autumn insects!
