This season, we’re turning the spotlight to someone who sees the world from a few feet closer to the ground—but with eyes full of wonder. We sat down with a 7-year-old explorer, thinker, and expert in all things fun to hear his take on life, play, and what really matters when you’re a kid.
Sometimes, the simplest answers hold the deepest truths. Let’s see!
What magical things do you think a Nin can turn into?
Mmmmm. (laughing) Maybe a fairy? Oh, I know! A spinning top! Also someone who needs a dress, a bouncy doll, a firefly, a rocket. Can I take one from my room to inspire myself? (he goes running and find one) It could also be a cup upside down and piece for balancing with a ball on top!
What things do you like to spend the most time playing with?
I love the Pendulum! I like to find equilibrium! My mom brought it home someday and I play a lot. I like to play with my little brother because he puts the pieces in places I’m not expecting and it’s super funny! And also Mandalas! And constructing! Yes, I love that!
If you could have a superpower just for playing, what would it be?
I’d love to have infinite pieces and I’ll make a tower to the sky. Maybe there would be a factory that runs on its own making wood dust that gets converted into infinite wood pieces. Can I draw it?
What fun or crazy game would you like to invent?
Should I invent it? Or could I tell anyone else to do it?
Whatever you feel like.
I would tell everyone from Grapat to give life to all the Nins! And I will take them tothe park and make them go down the slide. At the end there would be a trampoline so they can go back again!
What do you do on a day when there’s nothing to do?
Buff! I will go down to a little space I have to invent things with wood. I have a table, some tools… My grandfather gave it to me, he also loves woodworking! I made ships, instruments, swords, random pieces for constructions and a lot more.
So, you like Doing Nothing?
More or less… well… YES! But I don’t like to count sheeps because once I made it to 300 and still couldn’t sleep! One, two, three… Till 300!! I like to think about infinite things, for example: one person is drawing someone that is drawing, and this person is also drawing someone who is drawing…all the time, that’s infinite. There’s a lot more things but I don’t want to talk about them now. Well, one more: Imagine someone in the desert walking in circles, he’s thirsty and he drinks. When he starts the circle again… he’s thirsty again!
How many things can you do on the floor, apart from playing?
You can count how many squares there’s on a tiled floor! You can draw, make origami, read… When I was little I used to fall to the floor while sleeping! Now, when it’s hot in summer I like to lie myself on the floor, it’s cold and I like it!
If there were no adults around for a whole day—not even one—what would you do?
Hahaha! I will eat a lot of fruit! I love fruit! Also play football inside and leave our chickens run free around home! Play hide and seek with my sister and brother, and I will hide my little brother in the chimney! hahaha. Also, play the piano at super-high volume and make a pillow fight with my sister!
What are some things you think only kids really understand? And not adults!
Mmmm. All adults in the world? Or just my parents? Because me and my siblings know a lot of things about birds! And my parents don’t! They only know hoopoe, robin and sparrow! Do you know which one is the bee-eater?
“No I don’t”
See! I’m right!
Look! I’m on the sofa but it’s a swimming-pool! PloF!
So, you like adults doing kid’s things?
No, because they take up our place.
Oh! That’s interesting! So you think adults need to be adults and kids only kids?
¡Yes! But if I say, Mum! Can you come play with me or draw with me? Then yes. But not if I don’t ask for it, because then they take my place, and adults have so many ideas and I want to have ideas on my own!
And do you want to grow up?
No!
Why?
Look, when I’m 12years old I want to start all over again.
Buuut, 12 is not an adult, right?
We’ll, when I’m 31! or 53! 0r 45!
Because adults play?
Yes, they do!
Oh, yes? What do they do?
They draw, play with little kids, tell stories, you do a lot of things!
Imagine an adult that forgot how to play. What would you tell him or her?
First of all I think I’ll show you how to paint. I’d say: take a paper, you probably know what it is.And then take a pencil and do whatever you like, some scribbles! ¡Full of them!
So what do you tell them playing is?
Mmmm.
So difficult?
I think playing is to take something and use it in a funny way! Like maybe take a spoon and draw some eyes and a mouth and then you have a puppet! And you can play! Or to use cardboard from the recycling bin and make a marble run, I made a big one some weeks ago! It has a big slide and a long line that made pim – pum – pim! and then it jumps and goes through a hole and a tube until arriving at my bed.
I could tell more things but I don’t want to be here talking so much, like reciting a poem!
One more!
Will you tell them to take off their shoes?
Maybe, if it’s out with the shoes, but not at home! Also I will teach how to be a good person! And to follow some rules, but not that much hahaha.
